The Guardian recently pointed out that few pharmaceutical companies have promising drugs in their pipelines and many patents for blockbuster drugs are about to expire (http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2008/aug/30/pharmaceuticals.medicalresearch), so it's no wonder these companies are trying to milk current drugs.
